Blog Tour - Bone Deep by Kim O'Brien - Character Interview + Giveaway

Today I'm taking part in the blog tour for Kim O'Brien's Bone Deep. If you're in the mood for a suspenseful story, then this is the book for you. To give you a little more insight into the story, I've had the pleasure of interviewing its main character, Paige. Keep reading to see what she had to say, to find out more about the book, and for a chance to win a copy of the book.

Your father is a famous archeologist so you’ve always been around archaeology. What do you love most about it?

Paige: Archeologists are obsessed with the prehistory of mankind and I guess I am too. Did you know that 99 percent of mankind’s development occurred within the prehistoric cultures, yet there are no written records? So it’s really exciting to bring something out of the earth that has been buried for hundreds of years and study it, try to figure out what it meant to the people who used it.

Do you see yourself following in your father’s footsteps and becoming an archaeologist yourself?

Paige: Yes, but I’d like to become an anthropologic archaeologist. This would not only let me get involved with the site excavation but also let me study how past societies lived and explore more deeply the cultural aspects of things. Folklores, legends, and myths all fascinate me.

When you were little you made up stories for you and Emily as part of the game you played. How did you come up with all those elaborate stories?

Paige: Creating the stories was easy. All I had to do was think of something really scary and dangerous—something that our parents would have forbidden us from doing if they knew about it. The idea was to scare ourselves silly. We were looking for ways to break into the world of the supernatural and we believed that fear held a special kind of power. If we were frightened enough, we would have enough “power” to cut through that very thin veil we believed separated us from the dead.

What was your favourite story you ever made up?

Paige: I guess the one about the Caymans—dangerous beasts who were half-coyote and half-human. They were sort of like werewolves and came out after dark. They wandered the dearest looking for souls to steal so they could become human again. These Caymans possessed extraordinary powers that could be ours if we could lock eyes with them at night. Emily and I spent hours learning to imitate a coyote’s howl perfectly so we could try to call them to us.

What three things should people know before reading yours story?

Paige: That the truth is not always what you think it is.
That Indiana Jones is a very skewed image of an archaeologist.
That ghosts are real—I’ve seen them.

About the book
When Paige Patterson travels to Arizona to spend the summer with her archeologist father, she expects answers. Why did her parents divorce? Why did her father choose his career over family? She doesn’t expect to be reunited with her best friend Emily Linton, a girl she has always admired and secretly wanted to emulate, or to find herself falling for the project manager’s son, Jalen Yazzi.

But the summer takes a turn when Emily vanishes. As the police struggle for answers, Paige sets out to find the truth.

The search takes Paige from the Cliffside ruins of prehistoric Native Americans to the Navajo Nation to the horrifying possibility that the answer is much closer to home. Emily, it turns out, was not the only one good at hiding things.

Her father has no alibi for the night Emily disappeared. An intern with the motive insists he’s innocent. And Jalen has some secrets of his own.

Old bones might not be the only things buried in the ruins. As Paige digs deeper into Emily’s disappearance, she realizes that uncovering the truth may cost her everything.

Blog Tour - Stone Cold Touch by Jennifer L. Armentrout - Character Interview & Giveaway

Today I have the pleasure of being part of the blog tour for Jennifer L. Armentrout's latest book, Stone Cold Touch. I am so happy to be taking part because I absolutely LOVED this book. And now I get to have Layla, Zayne and Roth answering a few questions. Be sure to keep reading to the end for your chance to win a signed copy of the book!

Emilie: Roth and Zayne, you’ve recently had to work together a little. How has it been doings something you never thought you would do?
Zayne: I hate working with a demon, but I’d do anything for Layla.
Roth: I’m more open-minded than Stony. He’s obviously a little judgy.

Emilie: Layla, what’s it like having to almost play referee between Roth and Zayne?
Layla: I hate that Roth and Zayne don’t get along because they’re both important to me. I understand why it’s hard for them to like each other, but it’s a constant back and forth between them. It drives me crazy.

Emilie: What’s one thing each of you admires about the others?
Roth: Zayne takes care of Layla. So he can’t be all bad. Mostly, but not all.
Zayne: Roth made a sacrifice for Layla that I wasn’t expecting. I have to admire that about him.
Layla: I admire both guys for different reasons. Roth surprised me because he’s completely different than I expected from a demon and Zayne has always been there for me from the first time that I met him.

Emilie: From what I know, you didn’t really see what happened with the Lilin coming. What do you think is going to happen next?
Roth: Not sure, but even Hell is worried.
Zayne: It can’t be good.

Emilie: To finish off, what would each of you say or do to convince people who haven’t read your story to do so?
Roth: I don’t think I need to convince anyone once they’ve met me.
Zayne: That’s your answer? How do you even stand being around him, Layla?
Layla: *Sigh*

Thank you to Layla, Zayne and Roth for answering these questions and even keeping things civil. Well, for the most part. If you want to get your hands on a signed copy of Stone Cold Touch, just leave a comment below and I will pick a winner from all the comments. US/Canada only. Ends November 11.

Blog Tour: The Art of Lainey by Paula Stokes - Character Interview + Giveaway

Today I have the pleasure of taking part in the Canadian blog tour for Paula Stokes' upcoming The Art of Lainey. I've already had the chance to read this book and I absolutely loved it. If you're looking for a fantastic read for summer, this is it. And if you want a glimpse at what awaits you in the book, keep reading to learn more about Micah, my favourite person in this story.

What prompted you to start working at Denali? Did it have anything to do with your culinary aspirations?
Actually my culinary aspirations came from working at Denali. I got my job there when I was fifteen. It’s a long story, but basically I lied to my mom and told her I had gotten offered a job in order to avoid our yearly trip to the cemetery. (I hate that place.) So then I had to find a job ASAP so she didn’t bust me for lying. I went wandering around Hazelton, saw a Help Wanted sign in the window of Denali, and filled out an app. I’m pretty sure the manager only hired me because she liked the rock band T-shirt I was wearing, but hey, whatever works. It turned out that I’m naturally good at cooking an baking. I especially like baking because it’s a real challenge to get the ratios and flavors just right.

What has it been like growing up without your dad? It seems to have made you and your sister really close.
Sorry, I don’t like talking about my dad. But yeah, Trinity is the shit. After Dad died, she basically kept our family running while Mom and I took turns self-destructing. My mom did my trinity tattoo in her honor. She had to keep stopping in the middle because she kept crying.

Be honest, what was your initial reaction when Lainey asked you to be her fake boyfriend?
I thought it was a ridiculous idea, but sometimes ideas work, you know? Plus my sadistic side liked the thought of dragging Girl Jock Lainey Mitchell to a bunch of places where she’d be uncomfortable so I could watch her flounder. I guess that’s kind of mean, huh? Whatever—she did the same thing to me.

Knowing what you know now, would you do things differently?
As far as all the “dates” and stuff, I wouldn’t change a thing because they were a fun way for Lainey and me to get to know each other. If I could do things over, I hope I would be less of a wuss, though. And less of a douchebag to both Lainey and my ex. I did them both wrong at one point, but that was mostly because I was a wuss.

From what I know about you, you’re not really what you seem. Do people often misjudge you because of how you look? Have you ever taken advantage of that?
Yup—they do. Take advantage of it? You mean I can use this to my benefit? Please elaborate.

What do you think the future holds for you? Is Lainey going to be featured prominently in that future?
I’m kind of hoping the future holds my own book, but right now I’m settling for a lengthy novella ;-) As far as Lainey goes, who knows, right? I mean, this is high school and shit can get pretty volatile. I think the end of the book makes my feelings pretty clear, but it’s not just up to me.

Thank you Micah for answering my questions, I can't wait for more people to get to know you.

About the book:
Soccer star Lainey Mitchell is greasing up to spend an epic summer with her amazing boyfriend, Jason, when he suddenly breaks up with her—no reasons, nor warning, and in public no less! Lainey is more than crushed, but with help form her friend Bianca, she resolves to do whatever it takes to get Jason back.

And that’s when the girls stumble across a copy of The Art of War. With just one glance, they’re sure they can sue the book to lure Jason back in Lainey’s arms. So Lainey channels her inner warlord, recruiting spies to gather intel and persuading her coworker Micah to pose as her new boyfriend to make Jason jealous. After a few “dates,” it looks like her plan is going to work! But now her relationship with Micah is starting to feel like more than just a game.

What’s a girl to do when what she wants is totally different from what she needs? How do you figure out the person you’re meant to be with, if you’re still figuring out the person you’re meant to be?

Blog Tour - Starling by Fiona Paul & Giveaway

Today I have the pleasure of being part of the blog post for Fiona Paul's Starling, hosted by Book Nerd Tours. This is the third and final book in her Venom series, and if you haven't already checked it out, you really should. And as part of today's blog tour, I have the pleasure of having Luca, one of the lovely boys from the story, here to answer a few questions. So without further ado, here is was Luca had to say.

What has it been like being away in France for your studies?

France! That seems so long ago when I think of everything that's happened in the past few weeks. It was…placid, you might say. I went to the university and quietly listened while lecturers and learned men spoke of courts and legalities. I spent most nights studying or writing letters to Cassandra. Returning to Venice, saving her from that wretched madman, it's helped me realize what's truly important. I don't crave excitement quite like Cassandra does, but I feel more alive, more passionate about everything, in her presence.

Did you come back to Venice only to protect Cassandra or were there other forces drawing you back to the city?

I was planning to return to Venice with the opes of setting a date for our wedding, but when I learned of my half-brother's depraved activities, I knew Cassandra might be in danger.

What has it been like reconnecting with Cassandra now that you are both older? Is she still the same Cass you knew before you went to France?

I have enjoyed reconnecting with Cassandra. I only wish it were under better circumstances. She is and she isn't the same girl, if that makes sense. The Cassandra I remember was this impulsive colt-like child. She was all arms and legs and thick wavy hair. Her handmaid was forever shrieking about her mussing her braids or getting her dresses dirty. Now Cassandra is more refined and elegant, but she still has that wild, impetuous streak in her where I never know exactly what she's going to do next.

Why do you think people are trying to hurt you and Cass? Does it have anything to do with the Order of the Eternal Rose and with why you were imprisoned?

It has everything to do with the Order of the Eternal Rose. I will not rest until I see the Order destroyed and its members punished. In the meantime, I will do whatever I must to keep Cassandra safe.

What do you think is going to happen now that you and Cass can't return to Venice?

Cassandra and I must go in search of the Book of the Eternal Rose. Within its pages lies the evidence we need to destroy the Order. The books was in Florence at one time. Now we are unsure of its location, but we will find it if it is the last thing we do.

Giveaway!

About the Book:
The dark, seductive conclusion to the thrilling Secrets of the Eternal Rose trilogy!

In the final book in the trilogy, Cass and Luca are back in Venice trying to find the Book of the Eternal Rose to clear Luca's name and keep them both out of prison. But the hunters become the hunted when the Order of the Eternal Rose figures out their plan. Filled with twists and turns, danger and torrid romances, this novel brings the Secrets of the Eternal Rose novels to a thrilling, heart-pounding, sexy conclusion.

A Mad, Wicked Folly Blog Tour - Author Interview

Today I have the pleasure of participating in Penguin Canada's blog tour for Sharon Biggs Waller's debut novel A Mad, Wicked Folly. Sharon has been kind enough to answer some questions on behalf of Will Fletcher, one of the characters (and love interests!) in the story. To find out more about him and his story, just keep reading.

What is it like being a police constable in London in 1909?

The suffrage movement took up a lot of police time. 1909 (and the years of suffrage movement in general) was a strange and confusing time for a lot of constables because they weren't used to dealing with the arrest of women. Most women they encountered were members of the working class, namely prostitutes. When the suffragettes came along, constables found themselves dealing with women who were often socially superior and who wouldn't go quietly. The constables were instructed to "act with firmness as well as tact." But sometimes constables were forced to handle them roughly anyway. Many police officers hated treating women in this way, but others relished it. The suffragettes had an odd relationship with the police. They needed them for protection from hostile crowds, but the police were also enforcing rules that suffragists found unfair.

What is is about the Suffragettes movement that made Will want to help them, even though all other police constables seem to be against it all?

William Fletcher is a young man who believes in fairness and in helping people. He feels he's tasked to keep the peace, but he doesn't agree with preventing people from fighting for their rights. When Will became a police constable he promised to protect victims, not create them. In addition, as he tells Vicky, he doesn't see the point in denying half the population the right to vote.

How has Will's job as a police constable helped him write his story?

As a police constable Will sees the suffering of people up close, and so he knows the destructive nature of poverty and how class can hold people in poverty. He's also seen how destructive inequality can be. His beat lies in the wealthiest parts of town, but he lives in a poorer one. Most people in Edwardian England remained in their own area and didn't usually frequent places where other classes lived. But Will moves through all faces of London every day, both in his work life and his personal life. He's able to see and experience life from many angles, and that helps him create believable characters.

What did Will think when he first made Victoria Darling's acquaintance?

I love this question! I thought about it a lot because when Will first sees Vicky, he looks at her like he knows her. I think we all feel this way when we first meet people we have a natural connection with. We get this feeling of, "oh, there you are!" I imagined Will saw the intensity on Vicky's face when she was drawing and recognized that in himself. Here was this potential dangerous situation and Vicky wasn't backing down. Rather, she was frantically trying to capture the scene, like any fervent artist or writer would. (Of course, Will thought she was beautiful, too!) When he heard Vicky denying she was a suffragette, he was intensely disappointed because he had this idea about her, and now he was wrong, and that caused him to act like a rotter. Will hates a coward.

What was it like working and collaborating with Victoria? The two seem to have quite an unusual relationship.

Both Vicky and Will support each other's talents wholeheartedly, and so they both feel encouraged and accepted when working together. You are right that this is unusual because they are both of different classes, but art and literature has a way of transcending class and gender, so if you look at their relationship from this angle it makes perfect sense. Of course, that comes back to bite Will on the bum. He forgets they are from two different worlds and starts to see her as something other than a collaborator.

What does Will hope for in the future?

He hopes that Vicky will be happy to keep collaborating with him and that they will be able to earn money from their work. As far as life with Vicky goes, Will is going to keep that one to himself. :)

Thank you Sharon for being kind enough to answer these questions on behalf of Will. It was great getting to know more about him. If you are interested in seeing what I thought of A Mad, Wicked Folly, be sure to check out my review.

Flicker & Burn Blog Tour - Character Interview + Giveaway!

Today I have the pleasure of being part of the blog tour for Flicker & Burn by T.M. Geoglein. I loved Cold Fury when I read it last year so I'm excited to see where Sara Jane goes in this story. In the meantime, I have Sara Jane here on the blog today to answer a few questions, so be sure to keep reading.

Sara Jane, you recently discovered that your family is deeply involved with the Chicago Mob. What was your initial reaction?

Shock is too small of a word. Flabbergasted, I guess, which became disbelief, than acceptance, and then betrayal. I love my parents, okay? Let’s be perfectly clear about that. But they lied to me for a long, long time and it has caused irreparable harm to them, my brother, and me.

After making that kind of discovery, how you deal with it all? Was there anyone you could talk to about all this information?

I haven’t had time to deal with it, to be honest. Almost from the moment I figured it out, someone – masked freaks, cops, now these red-eyed creatures – have been out to get me. Without my best friend, Doug, to talk to, I’d lose my mind. Ah, who am I kidding? I am losing my mind, piece by piece…

From what was in the journal you found, you seem to have something in you that makes you different. Have you been able to find out more about what that is?

Cold fury – ghiaccio furioso, as it’s called in Italian – allows me to channel the deepest fear of an adversary and turn it back on himself until he’s so terrified, he’ll do my bidding. But there are other components to it, as well – things I’m just learning about that are much more powerful and dangerous.

You were recently able to see your little brother. Do you have any more information you can share on what happened to your family on that night?

I wish I did. You have no idea how hard I wish I knew more. But trust me – I’ll find out, no matter how many bones I have to break.

Would you have any tips to give to anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation?

Channel your inner animal. Fight when you have to, run when you have to, and if you pause to take a breath or fail to watch your back, you’re dead. Not too cheery, but true.

Here is your chance to win one of three signed copies of Flicker & Burn or special art bookmarks. All you have to do is enter using the Rafflecopter form below. Giveaway is INTERNATIONAL.

His debut novel, COLD FURY, will be published by Penguin/Putnam in 2012 and is the first in a trilogy; he's currently working on the second book. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Laura, and two young children.

About the book:
Sara Jane Rispoli is still searching for her missing family, but instead of fighting off a turncoat uncle and crooked cops, this time she finds herself on the run from creepy beings with red, pulsing eyes and pale white skin chasing her through the streets in ice cream trucks; they can only be described as Ice Cream Creatures. They're terrifying and hell bent on killing her, but they're also a link to her family, a clue to where they might be and who has them.

While she battles these new pursuers, she's also discovering more about her own cold fury and more about the Chicago Outfit, how the past misdeeds--old murders and vendettas--might just be connected to her present and the disappearance of her family. But connecting the dots is tough and time-consuming and may finally be the undoing of her relationship with the handsome Max--who's now her boyfriend. But for his own safety, Sara Jane may have to end this relationship before it even really starts.

Her pursuers who've shown her her mother's amputated finger and the head of the Chicago Outfit who's just whistled her in for a sit-down make a romance unthinkable. The only thing that matters is finding her family and keeping everyone she loves alive.

While He Was Away Blog Tour: This or That with Penna

As part of the blog tour for Karen Schreck's While He Was Away, I have the pleasure today of hosting Penna, the main character in the story. She was nice enough to answer some This or That questions for me and here is what she had to say.

Coffee or Tea?
Strong coffee, perfectly doctored. Most definitely.

Summer or Winter?
Winter. And fall. And spring. Because come summer, he's away.

Morning or Night?
Night. Mornings are for sleeping in afterwards.

Chocolate or Candy?
Ice cream. Shared right out of the carton.

Sweet or Salty?
The perfect combination of both. There's nothing like pretzels dipped in that ice cream.

Phone call or Text?
Not a big fan of so-called modern technology these days. At least, not for long-distance relationships. But when there's not static or lost connections, I'd take a phone call over a text. I mean. His voice. Come on.

Movies or TV?
Movies on TV. The chairs in the closest theater are smelly and sticky. Springs poke thought the torn seat cushions. I tore my favorite jeans one night, plopping down with a tub of rancid popcorn to watch some forgettable flick. Give me the comforts of my couch and my reliable, microwave, low-fat Orville-Redenbackers  any day.

E-mail or Snail Mail?
E-fail. That's what I call it (see Phone Call or Text). I am all about the handwriting. The doodles and drawings. The smell of his skin on the page.

Love or Friendship?
Like sweet and salty, the perfect balance of both is the way to go.

Thank you to Penna for answering these questions. Be sure to follow the rest of the blog tour through The Teen Book Scene's website!

Witchlanders Blog Tour: Interview with Ryder

As part of the blog tour for Witchlanders by Lena Coakley, I have the pleasure of having Ryder, one of the characters from the book, here on the blog answering a few questions. Be sure to also check out the giveaway for a chance to win a Kindle 3. But without further adieu, here is what Ryder had to say!

Where does your hatred of witches and what they believe in come from?

I don’t know that I hate witches. After all, I have a lot of relatives up there in the covens. By all accounts my grandfather, who was a witch, was a good man. But it just irks me the way everyone in our village bows down to coven dwellers as if they have the ear of the goddess herself. And they don’t do any work for it! Since my father died, my sister and I have had the running of our farm, and I can tell you, growing hicca in this rocky soil isn’t easy. And then the witches come along and take one quarter of it for their tithe—one quarter! If they could really tell the future as they claimed—if they could really protect us from our enemies—then maybe I’d think they deserved it. But you have to understand, until recently I’d never seen anything to make me believe magic really existed in the world. I thought that some witches might have convinced themselves they could see the future when they threw the bones, but the others? I thought they were just liars.

Why did you choose to believe in what your mother predicted despite how you feel about witches and what they do?

I didn’t know what to think about my mother’s prophecies. At first I worried she had taken too much maiden’s woe. Some people think that flower helps you to see the future, but really it just drives you mad. Later, it seemed as if my mother’s prophecies had come true somehow. I’m beginning to realize that there are a lot of things I don’t know about the world. But if magic really exists, I’m going to have to rethink everything.

At one point it looked like you were going to kill Falpian. What made you change your mind about him?

Goddess take me if I ever figure it out. He’s a spoiled, rich blackhair and I should have killed him on sight. All my life I’ve been taught to hate his people, the Baen. Twenty years ago they came with their black ships and attacked our two port cities, Barbiza and Tandrass. They killed a lot of Witchlanders, my grandfather included.

But I just had a feeling that Falpian wasn’t as bad as all that. First of all, he had a chance to kill me and he didn’t take it. Maybe he’s just a coward, but who knows, maybe there’s some good in everyone, even blackhairs.

Did you always feel the strong need to protect your younger sisters or did you take up that role after your Fa's death?

Fa seemed so ordinary when he was alive, but everything held together then. We were poor but I never wondered where our next meal was coming from. Fa took all that worry on himself. I never gave a moment’s thought to what a heavy load that was for him, and of course that was how he wanted it. When he died, yes, I guess I tried to do what he’d done, tried to take all the worry of our farm on myself so that my two sisters could have a childhood. I just don’t think I succeeded very well. My mother was no help, I can tell you that.

You say that if your father hadn't died you would have left and gone to sea. Did you want to leave because of the witches or were there other reasons?

No, it wasn’t because of the witches. I always knew I wasn’t meant to be a farmer. I suppose a lot of people have a feeling like they’re meant for something more than their lot. And I suppose that feeling often comes to nothing and they end up doing exactly what their father and their grandfather did. I didn’t want to be like that, though. I wanted to get away and see the world. Now that I think back on it, I think it was magic I was really wishing for.

When you first met him, did you ever think you would have the relationship you have with Falpian?

I still don’t believe it now! Honestly, I still have an irrepressible urge to push him into a lake sometimes. Maybe someday I will.

What did it feel like to find out everything you had ever known and believed in was a lie, especially concerning Aata and Aayse?

To be honest, the history of dead witches never meant much to me, so finding out that Aata and Aayse, the witch prophets, weren’t exactly who everyone thought they were? I didn’t care so much at first. In a way, I admire Aata and Aayse more now that I know who they really were. I’m descended from their followers—possibly from Aata or Aayse herself!—and for the first time I’m starting to wonder what that really means. I think my witch heritage is going to be harder to get away from than I thought.

Thank you so much Ryder for answering my questions. It's always nice to know what is going through somebody else's mind, especially when that person went through what we're talking about.
